YOU ARE
You Are taps into the dichotomies and nuances of love as an experience rather than a static emotion.
“I wanted to express in the melody and dynamics of this song that when you access vulnerability to feel something real like love or being open, you’re going to have to also be open to all the other layers that come with it. You can’t just pick and choose. Love comes with pain, hurt, confusion, jealousy, obsession, attachment, and all these other layers that often no one talks about,” comments Malak on the process of writing You Are.
Malak on why she chose to release You Are as the second single, “You Are is the song that speaks to my heart the most from the entire album. It truly represents what the album is about and why I wrote this collection of songs; it’s the one we all connected to the most in the process. When we performed it opening for Oscar and the Wolf and Balthazar; it’s the song people reacted to the most. It tells a story about vulnerability.”
Love is rooted in duality and this is what the music video created for the release of You Are showcases. In Malak’s directorial debut, she directs and stars in the music video that supplements the lyrics of You Are.
In the video Malak is seen being pulled in different directions, her body moving in separation from her mind, choreographed by Darius Boatner, the movement reveals the true meaning of the song.
In the end she finds peace in accepting the complexities of emotion; this is how we find ourselves as humans, and how we come back home.
